
St Francis de Sales School, Nongalbibra
SFS School, Nongalbibra, was started in 1979, with 55 students and three teachers. School fee was not taken from the students until 1993, when it was upgraded to English medium. At present there is a fullfledged school recognised by the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education (MBoSE). It is an HSLC examination centre for all the nearby schools. The School has a strength of around 1000 students. As of 2015, the Catholics in the school constitute 61 percent, non catholics Christians 30 percent and Hindus 8 percent. In 2015, there were 1048 students, 33 teaching staff and 3 non-teaching staff (CSEBTD Report, 2015). The first batch of class X students passed out from the school in 1992.
Mr Kontu Marak who is a teacher even today, has been a teacher from the inception of the school in 1979. The first building of 10 classrooms was built by the diocese. Another five class rooms were built in 1989 to which Fr
Augustine Vellaramkuzhiy added a two-storey building of 10 class rooms. Fr Thomas Nirappel added four more class rooms in 2004 and nine more classrooms in 2013. In 2009, a school canteen was opened with sufficient infrastructure and appliances to cater to school students have a hygienic home made snacks and soft drinks. In 2010, Fr Joseph Chettany introduced bus service that materialised the long felt need for transporting school students from distant areas.
With assistance from the MPLAD scheme of late P.A. Sangma, the local M.P the school developed the present play ground in front of the school. Madam Debora Marak, the local MLA, and Minister of Social welfare, Government of Meghalaya, gave grant for introducing computer science in the school and for a drinking water project.
