St Francis de Sales School, Sateek

At the start of the mission at Sateek, the village leaders of Sateek, who had donated the land for the mission placed the condition that a school shall be built so that their children will have the opportunity to receive good education within their setting. The village leaders had their own fears: whether their desire would be honoured by us; whether their children can be entrusted to our care; whether we would begin the school with the starting of the coming academic year (2011-12).

The Provincial Administration took immediate steps to start the construction of a temporary structure with the view to open the school at the start of the 2011-12 academic year. Fr V.A Paul, the Parish Priest, proposed Mr Sakhawliana, a parish member, who could assist us in this work. Mr Sakhawliana was a great blessing to us who were totally strangers to people and ignorant of the local language. The plan was to build a temporary structure with timber, CGI roofing and walls with asbestos sheets. The foundation stone for the school was blessed and laid by Fr V.A Paul on December 8, 2010. The collaborative enterprise helped the completion of the temporary school building with seven class rooms ready just in 40 days.

Finally, on February 4, 2011, the school was inaugurated by Fr Francis Thadathil, the former Provincial of Northeast India province, and blessed by Most Rev. Stephen Rotluanga, Bishop of Aizwal in the presence of many fathers, brothers, sisters, the village council members, teachers, parents and students. The new school began classes from KG to class III. Fr Santhosh took charge as the first Headmaster of the School.

The trust and confidence of the village people and leaders grew with every development of the Mission. As they grew in conviction about our commitment, their expectations were also raised to new levels. A better school building for the children was a dream dear to their heart. Sensing the need, the Provincial Administration took steps to improve the quality of the facilities provided to the children. Constructing a new school building became an important aspect of this improvement. Funds were sought for the realisation of this dream. The blessing of the foundation stone for the new school building was performed on January 17, 2015 by Fr George Panthanmackel, the former provincial of Northeast India province.

The actual construction work of the new school was started in May 2015, which has a three-phase construction plan. In the first Phase, the plan was to complete Block I (six classrooms, toilets and staircase) of the school. Thus the first column of the new building was erected on May 25, 2015. The first floor work was completed within another five months. The children began to use three classrooms from April 2016. However, the final works of the building were finished only by August 2016. The inauguration and blessing of the Block I took place on November 9, 2016, by Fr George Panthanmackel, the then Provincial of Northeast India province, in the presence of friends and benefactors.
