MSFS Provincialate, Narengi

On August 1, 1995, Guwahati diocese was raised to the status of an Archdiocese and Bishop Menamparampil became its first Archbishop. When the MSFS arrived in the Northeast, in 1975, Guwahati was under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Shillong and His Grace Hubert D’ Rosario was its Archbishop. The first house of the MSFS in Guwahati was SFS Bhavan, Karguli, followed by SFS Bhavan, Dispur.

During the period between 1990 and 1996, the Province had a number of new priests ordained and new mission centres opened. These developments hastened the need for a more spacious and convenient house as Provincial House. Hence, the search for a suitable land at Guwahati to build a Provincial House was begun in 1995; it met with success in 1996, with the new Provincial, Fr George Parampukattil (1996-2001) had taken office as the Provincial.

The work of construction of a new and spacious Provincial House was begun in 1996 and was completed by 1998. It was inaugurated and blessed on October 24, 1998 by the Superior General Rev. Fr Emile Mayoraz. The newly built house was named ‘MSFS Provincialate’ and Fr George Parampukattil, the Provincial, along with Fr Jose Thekkel, the Provincial Bursar, moved into the new house on the same day.

From March 8 to 11, 1999, the Provincial Congress was held in this house. The house was utilized for number of retreats, renewal and update programmes for religious and priests. It was also very much sought after by various people to conduct different programmes for different sections of the society.

FAsCE India began functioning in 2005, with a room in the Provincial House being its office. With an intention to upgrade the school, a plot of around 5 acres of land, adjacent to the existing one, was acquired by the administration. In the later years, this land was filled up to make it suitable for further constructions.

The MSFS Provincial House, Guwahati houses the office of the provincial, and many ministries like FAsCE India office, Fransalian Youth Mission Office, Media and Communication Centre, office of the Parish Priest etc.
