Mother of Compassion Mission & Holy Redeemer Renewal Centre: Mawkhlam
Mawkhlam falls under West Kahasi Hills and in Nongstoin diocese. The district was carved out of Khasi Hills District on October 28, 1976. The district headquarter is located at Nongstoin.
A Renewal Centre was the long cherished dream of the people in the diocese of Nongstoin. This dream showed its signs of fulfilment when MSFS fathers from Holy Redeemer Renewal Centre, (HRRC) Umroi, responded to the invitation of Rev. Victor Lyngdoh, Bishop of Nongstoin, to conduct Charismatic Bible Convention on a regular basis. It was on February 13, 2010, that the MSFS began the first Bible convention in Mawkhlam on a trial basis. The response of the people to these Bible Conventions was very encouraging and it was decided to conduct the Bible convention on every second Saturday of the month. Since then the Nongstoin diocese has begun to experience blessings of God more profusely as they gathered in numbers to listen to the word of God. People began to experience transformation in their lives. Lives were touched and chronic illnesses disappeared from many. However, the people felt that fathers staying permanently would help them to have easy access for them in prayer and counselling, as the fathers from Umroi went back after every convention. The bishop of the diocese was in full praise of the preaching ministry of the MSFS and he wanted MSFS fathers to begin a Renewal Centre for the diocese of Nongstoin. Hence, the Bishop approached Fr Francis Thadathil, the Provincial, with the request to start a retreat centre in the diocese and offered every help possible.
As a result, on April 11, 2011, Fr Joby Kurikilamkattu msfs came to stay at Mawkhlam with the view of building up of a prayer centre. He stayed in the LP school building near the old church for more than a year with Fr Mathew Edattu as companion. Later, the present retreat centre was built on the 4½ acres of land offered by the Bishop and the village church together.
