Don Bosco School, Hamren

In 1975, when the land was formally donated to the mission, Fr Albano D’Mello sdb with help of the people of the villages namely, Langkar’om, Umrinti and Ambinong, cleared the the jungle and built a temporary shed to begin a school. And thus in 1976, the school began officially. At this stage, the school was looked from Sojong parish.

In the first batch of students was Joseph Teron from Tapat who became a Salesian priest and later on parish priest of Sojong. Unfortunately, the transfer of Fr Albano from Sojong to Umswai Parish in 1978 negatively affected the progress of the mission at Hamren, so much so that the functioning of the school halted completely. As a result, between 1978 and1986, the allotted land for Don Bosco School became a jungle land once again.

On September 21, 1986, Most Rev. Mathai, Bishop of Diphu diocese, during his visit to Hamren, felt the need to restart the school at the request of the people. Accordingly, Albano D’Mello sdb came to  Hamren in response to a letter from Most. Rev Mathai dated November 15, 1986. He gathered the villagers and asked their help in clearing the jungle and making a house for starting a school. Fr Albano also informed that all the Catholics around the area would render one day of free work for the purpose. For the rest of the days’ work, they would be duly paid in wages. The jungle was cleared and a temporary shed for the school was made. Mr Longsing Tiso, and many people helped out to complete the work. Once again the people of Hamren felt happy. Their dream of having a good English Mission School in Hamren was becoming a reality.

The school has grown to the status of a secondary school and has become the pride of the town. The first batch of students appeared for the public exams in 2001 and so far 15 batches have come out of the institution. A lot of infrastructural development has taken place within the years. There are 800 students, 24 teachers, and 6 non-teaching staff. Most of the former students are well placed in life and are an inspiration to the present-day youth.
