St Francis de Sales Technical School, Kheronigaon

St Francis de Sales (SFS) Technical Institute, located at Kheronigaon, is a village populated by Dimasa and Karbi tribes. It is 16 km. away from Diphu, the district headquarters of Karbi Anglong, and is placed in a vast area of three acres of plain green land.

It was started in 1992 during the time of Most Rev. Mathai Kochuparambil, the Bishop of Diphu as a non-formal educational institute for tribal boys who did not or could not complete their formal education. In 1997, Most Rev. John Kattrukudiyil the Bishop of Diphu, entrusted it to the North East India Province of the MSFS Congregation. Since September 30, 1997, the MSFS has been managing the institute. The MSFS took up the Institute with the conviction that such a ministry can be of great help to the youth of the region, who were often easy prey to anti-social and militant movements.

Tall and mighty trees, rustled with meadows and enchanting hills, surround the spacious campus of the institute. It has a hostel building with the capacity to provide accommodation to 50 boys at a given time. The Institute provides non-formal technical training to boys who are unable to pursue formal education either due to lack of motivation or financial burdens. Therefore, this Institute provides skills that will help them earn a living as semi-skilled helpers. Those who are more able and enterprising will be able to start their own small workshops with a minimum investment in tools or equipment.

Between 2005 and 2007, an externally funded project provided scholarship for Skill Development Training. This support enabled the institute to provide training to number of drop-out students many of whom found jobs inside and outside the state. Over the years the institute keeps giving training in welding and fabrication, carpentry, electrification, printing and book binding, including motor vehicle driving with a knowledge of basic trouble shooting. The courses are conducted with an emphasis on practical working knowledge and experience. It has a printing press for its sustenance. The trainees are also given spiritual and moral formation through different spiritual exercises and animation programmes. The instructions in the basics of faith and values and human relationships empower them to manage their lives and live a better Christian life. The homely discipline in the institute, together with value education and classes on civic responsibilities, make them better citizens and help in improving their self-respect and standard of living. They become promoters of social and civic values.

The Institute trains around 41 students every year from the villages / parishes of the region on an average since 1997. All the students are provided food and boarding facilities. Every trainee is also given an opportunity to obtain a valid light motor vehicle driving licence at the end of the training in their own respective trade. The SFS Technical Institute with its motto “Giving the Best to the Least” keeps on working with professional competence and collaborates with government and industrialists to provide employment to the trainees.
